KEWI Launches New Cohort of Integrated EIA and EA Professional Training
The Kenya Water Institute (KEWI) has officially commenced another cohort of its Integrated Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Environmental Audit (EA) Training Programme at the Nairobi Campus, bringing together environmental practitioners from Kenya and South Sudan for an intensive six-week professional development course. The programme reinforces KEWI's commitment to strengthening environmental governance by equipping professionals with the knowledge and practical skills required to support sustainable development.
The latest cohort has attracted participants from the public sector, private sector, academia and independent environmental consultancy, reflecting the increasing demand for qualified Environmental Impact Assessment and Environmental Audit practitioners. Organisations represented include Earth Lungs Reforestation Foundation, Star Touch Consultancy Firm, Trans Nzoia Water and Sewerage Company, Kiambu Water and Sewerage Company and the Kenya Water Institute, alongside private participants from Kenya and South Sudan.
The training is spearheaded by Mr. John Waweru, a seasoned Water Resources and Environmental Management trainer at KEWI and a NEMA-registered EIA/EA Lead Expert. Delivered through a blended learning approach that combines face-to-face instruction with online sessions, the programme offers participants the flexibility to undertake intensive learning while benefiting from interactive discussions, practical exercises and field-based experiences.
Speaking at the commencement of the programme, facilitators underscored the growing importance of Environmental Impact Assessment and Environmental Audit as essential tools for promoting sustainable development. With Kenya experiencing rapid infrastructure expansion, urbanisation and industrial growth, environmental professionals play a critical role in ensuring that development projects balance economic progress with environmental conservation and social well-being.
Over the six weeks, participants will undertake comprehensive training covering the principles and historical development of Environmental Impact Assessment, stakeholder engagement, environmental management systems, strategic environmental assessment, environmental auditing, environmental management plans, project management, occupational health and safety, industrial ecology, resettlement action planning, and the policy, legal and administrative framework governing Integrated Environmental Impact Assessment and Environmental Audit in Kenya. The curriculum also incorporates practical case studies and field learning to enable participants to apply theoretical knowledge to real-life environmental challenges.
Beyond technical instruction, the programme aims to strengthen participants' ability to identify environmental risks, recommend practical mitigation measures and contribute to informed decision-making across public and private sector projects. By integrating environmental, social and economic considerations into project planning and implementation, participants will be better equipped to promote responsible resource management and sustainable development.
Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be well-positioned to pursue registration and licensing as Environmental Impact Assessment and Environmental Audit experts. Their enhanced competencies will support responsible project implementation across various sectors while ensuring compliance with Kenya's environmental laws and internationally recognised best practices.
